Identity in Portraiture
This work explores the relationship between the model and the painter and how personality can override the exacting tradition of portraiture. I have explored this idea by researching Jean Baudrillard’s “Simulacra and Simulations” as well as multiple other works that detail the artist’s own experience in creating art. Alice Neel and Edward Hopper are among the artists I reference that have evoked a personal atmosphere in their work by handling the paint in a way that is unique to them. As a result, the image created implies the subject’s sense of self-identity through the gaze of the artist. The painter inherently becomes the filter in which the image is translated and transposed with total control resulting in a painting of a persona, rather than a mere person.
